To combat a negative onslaught from online bots and trolls, Amazon paused the ability to leave a user review on the fantasy series currently streaming on Prime Video.
The practice of instituting a 72-hour delay started with another series — “A League of Their Own” — back in August, according to Variety. Amazon told Variety that each critique is evaluated “to determine whether it’s genuine or a forgery created by a bot, troll or other breed of digital goblin.”
“The Rings of Power,” which premiered last week with the first two episodes, was being review bombed on such sites as Rotten Tomatoes. The average professional critic score on that site is 84% favorability, while user scores are at 39%.
Trolls are apparently targeting the series because actors of color have been cast in a variety of roles as inhabitants of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
Amazon revealed this weekend that the series had been streamed by 25 million viewers globally over the initial 24 hours that it was available on Prime.
